I think we need to get back to our roots (Ha! See what I did there?) and take a real sense of pride in growing our own food! But, where the heck do you start? How are you successful at it?

I really want a garden! But, I am intimidated. I won't lie. Mostly because I am a perfectionist and I truly don't like feeling like I am wasting my time.

  • Hi There!
I would say it really depends on the ground where you plan on putting a garden. We have a big garden but also raised beds so that everything has an equal opportunity and isn’t hitting all of the sandrock around our place.
They always say “You have to put work into a garden to get rewards out of it” My best advice is to start with something easy, next spring get a few tomato plants or strawberries, or maybe even some herbs. All are very hardy and don’t need lots of water or lots of care. Plant them or give them a decent sized pot and watch them grow. Weather you have a hectic schedule or just not very green in the thumbs these are surely going to help you.

Lastly google any questions you may have or use YouTube.

  • I have the worst soil at my place. Its mostly sand and rocks. Big rocks everywhere! Water goes right through it! With good soil, compost, some used coffee grounds, egg shells and a good organic fertilizer my garden actually looks like a garden this year!

  • I recommend checking out the book “Farm Girl Fresh: Eating Pure in a Processed Foods World” by Joyce Kaping and Colleen Anderson. It’s got everything you need to know about gardening and then some.
